Two red-themed paintings headed to Willard Art and Frame in Bothell!

On my easel today, a 9x12 oil version of the plein

On my easel today, a 9x12 oil version of the plein air sunset I did on Maui this week. I'm trying to practice the tons of paint/smaller brush technique we saw in our @calvin_liang_ workshop earlier this month. It's hard to break the mindset of stretching the paint! Instead, I have to remind myself to reload the brush, and not overmix my piles on the palette. I'm sure it's good for me as an artist!

All four Maui paintings together. These are Holbein acrylic gouache on Guerrilla Painter Carton panels. I really enjoyed both the medium and the surface. The Carton panels are very thin, Kraft-toned cardstock stiffened with resin, so they don't buckle at all. They make a great surface for gouache after you scrub in the first layer, which can bead slightly.

4x6 painted in half an hour while the sun went down, then photographed when all the color was gone. Painting sunsets is always a rush!

I did this one while the rest of the family waited in line for @ululanishawaiianshaveice. Seemed like a good division of labor!

A little vacation plein air, looking toward Molokini and Kaho'olawe from Maui. 4x6 acrylic gouache, which I haven't used in a long time. It dries with a sealed surface, which I figured would be good for the beach.

"Korean Wedding Ducks" in a little 8x16 still life

"Korean Wedding Ducks" in a little 8x16 still life today. I bought these in the Insadong area on a trip to Seoul about 20 years ago, and yesterday I decided it was time to paint them. There is something really satisfying about painting a limited subject like this--with fewer choices about what to include, I can relax and enjoy the flow.

The carved ducks are a little different from each other--the shapes of the heads, tails and wings and where the colors are placed. I painted them as they are, and I hope the difference is charming!

I will mostly be there in spirit--I had a can't-miss event already booked tonight--though I hope to drop by right at the end. I know the folks at CBB will be there to welcome you warmly, though, and I hope everybody has a great time!

Here's a big one I finished a couple of weeks ago, based on the quick draw painting I did in Driggs over the summer. That painting sold at the event, but knew I wanted to give these gorgeous, sculptural flowers another try.

During the quick draw, I placed them against the sky, but they were also casting shadows on a fantastic cedar fence that glowed copper in the morning light, so this time I used it as the inspiration for the background.

Sailing in November! There were sailboats all over the water between Edmonds and Kingston on Sunday when I painted this little 18ft boat in plein air, so I decided to "send it out on the water" in my studio!

Block in is done, based on yesterday's plein air! This is thinly scrubbed over the canvas in transparent red oxide, viridian and cobalt blue, then rubbed out with paper towels, rubber scrapers and q-tips. It gives me an easy way to get the image onto canvas and refine my composition before committing to opaque paint. If I don't like anything at this stage, I can rub it out completely and start over.
