In the Medieval Quarter of Orvieto, looking down Via Della Cava, which curves steeply down to Porta Maggiore. 8x10 gouache.

I bit off a little more than I could chew with this one--a super complicated subject with tons of perspective lines and a ground plane that slopes crazily in all directions. But I'm pleased with the light effect, and it's definitely a candidate for a studio painting in oils, where I can take my time and, you know, use a RULER 😂.

To Umbria! This was one of those moments where you see a magical light effect and you know you've got 15 minutes, tops, before it's gone. In this case, the setting sun was coming over the hill and hitting the wires in the vineyard and the edges of the trees, and I had to give it my best shot! 6x8 gouache

I was painting so quickly that I never got a photo of the scene, so the next two pictures are the sunset in the clouds afterward.

5x7 plein air gouache of a clock tower on the island of Murano. The tourists were out in force by the time we got to Murano, and I was asked for directions four times, told "Brava, Complimenti!" by several Italian nonnas strolling with their grandchildren, and only one guy offered to make his friend pose (hard for me to identify the language, possibly Romanian).

Honestly, I love the chitchat (aside from the offers to pose). It slows me down a little bit, but there is no better way to immerse myself in a location than to just stand there for an hour, let life flow around me, and talk to the people who are confident enough to approach. I especially love the children, of whom there were quite a few, including a 9yo girl from California, who is sad to be going home tomorrow.

Beautiful Burano! I took the 8:40 AM ferry and beat the crowds to spend an hour and a half painting with just the island residents. Half a dozen elderly Burano residents stopped to chat in lengthy, involved Italian, including Guido, who looked just like Carl from the movie Up. He stopped three times, and then just started hanging out next to me while he chatted with all the other passing retirees.
Definitely one of the best mornings of my life, despite my terribly insufficient DuoLingo Italian.

I painted this from the window of our AirBnB, using the pan gouache and watercolor setup I built for this trip, which works very well! I was painting too quickly to get a photo of the sky when the sun set beneath the clouds, but it was absolutely gorgeous!

Quick 8x10 sketch today from Edmonds looking across sunny (but cold!) Puget Sound. I was so excited to just get out and paint that I didn't spend a lot of time looking for the perfect scene, just got to work.

As @stapleton_kearns would say, it's wicked beaky 😁, but the two teenage boys who pulled up next to me were super impressed that a person could just look at something and paint it, so 😂.

We have a winner! In my ongoing toned paper trials

We have a winner! In my ongoing toned paper trials for gouache, Clairefontaine Paint'On Natural (middle) is the best so far. It's pretty smooth, but the warm tone, a little lighter than classic kraft paper, is great. It's 250gsm, and it takes multiple layers of gouache without any trouble.

The light grey paper is Hahnemuhle toned watercolor paper, which buckled too much and was so light in tone it may as well have been white. The darker grey is also Paint'On, but the tone is too dark in value for me.

I do wish the Paint'On paper was 100% cotton and 140lb instead of 90-ish, but it performs very well for an acid free pulp paper.

Testing toned papers for gouache, clockwise from top left are:

Canson Mi-Teintes Flannel Grey: Buckled so badly with the water that I didn't even proceed.

Stillman & Birn Nova Grey: Surprisingly okay, but just okay. Buckled a bit, and smoother than I like. I'd be afraid to layer too much.

Stonehenge Aqua Black: Being a true cold-press watercolor paper, the Stonehenge took the paint beautifully, even when I layered the foreground way past the point of reason. The trouble is that I just didn't enjoy painting on black. It's so hard to judge values, especially since I usually layer dark to light, which meant painting near-black into black.

What I really need is a paper as good as the Stonehenge that's the color of the Canson. Any ideas?

I spent this weekend in a fantastic workshop with Aaron Schuerr, sponsored by @pleinairwashingtonartists. Aaron did several outstanding demonstrations in oil and pastel (and dry erase marker 😂) and packed the rest of the time with useful information and exercises. The last picture is my own painting from the workshop, trying to put his tips into action. If you get a chance to take a workshop with Aaron, I highly recommend it--he's a dynamic teacher and you'll learn a lot!

A little gouache songbird for the season. Yesterday, I caught a picture of this Oregon junco resting in the big cedar tree between visits to my feeder. There's a whole crowd of little birds that love to feast on sunflower seeds, and with this week's snow, I thought he made a perfect subject to paint.
